SPACE DANDY Episode 23

2nd season Episode 10

恋人たちはトレンディじゃんよ
Koibito tachi ha trendy janyo
― Lovers Are Trendy, Baby

In Japan, romantic drama called "トレンディドラマ(Trendy Drama)" was pupular around 1990.
Though it's a Japanese-English word, the term "trendy" itself has sounded a bit old-fashioned for us.
Trendy Drama doesn't have formal definition, but has the following features.

SPACE DANDY Episode 22

2nd season Episode 9

A song of dance called "阿波踊り(Awa odori)" contains the lyric "同じアホなら踊らな損々(Onaji aho nara odoranya sonson)."

SPACE DANDY Episode 21

2nd season Episode 8

悲しみのない世界じゃんよ
Kanashimi no nai sekai jan yo

Personal cars in Japan have to undergo shaken every 2 years. (only new cars within 3 years)

●そんな弱腰でゴーゴルに勝てるわけがない!
Sona yowagoshi de Go-guru ni kateru wake ga nai

SPACE DANDY Episode 19

SPACE DANDY Episode 18

ビッグフィッシュはでっかいじゃんよ
Biggu Fisshu wa Dekkai Jan yo
― The Big Fish is Huge, Baby

One of my favorite anime in this season.
Each of episode is self-contained, so it is easy to watch.

QT
●釣りはに始まってに終わる
Tsuri ha funa ni hajimatte funa ni owaru
― Fishing starts with carp and ends with carp.

I have hardly ever been fishing, so I didn't know the phrase.
In the Japanese martial arts, there is a famous phrase,

・礼に始まりに終わる
Rei  ni hajimari rei  ni owaru
Start with a bow and end with a bow.

[Example]
・オタクの夏はコミケに始まりコミケに終わる
Otaku no natsu  ha comike ni hajimari comike ni owaru
― Otaku's summer starts with comike and ends with comike.

When Japanese hear the word "カープ(Ka-pu, Carp)," the pro baseball team occurs to their minds.
鮒(fune) means not common carp but crucian carp.
Speaking of crucian carp, there is a local specialty called 鮒寿司(funazushi).
I want to try to eat it once.

Dandy
●何か知らねぇか?穴場とか仕掛けとか。
Nanka shiraneeka  Anaba toka shikake toka
― Do you know anything about it? Like where to find them, or what tackle to use?

In fishing
穴場: secret fishing hole
仕掛け: hook rig

Meow
●しかし、思いっきり音信不通ですね。
  Shikashi, omoikkiri onshin futsuu desune.
― You know, we haven't heard a peep from him.

QT
きっぱりと連絡不能です。
  Kipparito renraku funou desu.
― He's completely out of touch with us.

思いっきりきっぱりと
音信不通連絡不能

Dandy
●それに、ムウナギなんてどうやら迷信らしいぜ。
Soreni Munagi nante douyara meishin rashiize.
― Also, this whole munagi business appears to be a superstition.

ムウナギ: Mu- + unagi(eel)

Dandy
しょうがねぇ。俺たちもジジイを追っかけるぞ。
Shouganee Ore tachi mo jijii wo okkakeruzo
What's the use? Let's go after the old man!

しょうがねぇ ← しょうがない

Erssie
おばけおっかなーい
  Obake okkanai
― I'm scared of monsters!

おばけ means not only monster but also ghost.

[Example]
お化け屋敷
 obake-yashiki
― fun house

・お金はおっかねぇ
  okane ha okkanee
― Money is scary.

L'delise
ひよっこめ!
  Hiyokko me
― Lousy tenderfoot!

ひよっこ: fledgling

L'delise
息を合わせて引くぞ!
  Iki wo awasete hiku zo
― Let's all pull together!

If you translate 息を合わせる literally, it means "synchronise the breathing."

[FYI]
阿吽の呼吸
  Aun no kokyuu
― the harmonizing, mentally and physically, of two parties engaged in an activity

All
うんどこしょ、どっこいしょ!うんどこしょ、どっこいしょ!
  Undokosho,  dokkoisho Undokosho, dokkoisho
― Yo-heave-ho!

Just calling out.
In a story "大きなかぶ(The Giant Turnip)", they shouts in the same way.

Dandy
●何だと、この老いぼれジジイ?!
  Nan dato, kono oibore jijii
― What was that, you decrepit old geezer?!

L'delise
青二才の若造が!
  Aonisai no wakazou ga
― You wet-behind-the-ears youngster!

青二才≒ひよっこ

Erssie
●二人仲良しこよし
  Futari nakayoshi-koyoshi
― The two of them are getting along fine!

The word "仲良しこよし" is used by or to young children.
A word consisting of seven letters has a nice ring.

[Example]
・夕焼け小焼け
 yuuyake-koyake
― sunset

Gentle
●この下品なアニメには似つかわしくない、紳士的な男だ。
Kono gehinna anime ni ha nitsukawashikunai, shinshitekina otoko da.
― I'm a gallant man, sorely out of keeping with a lowbrow anime like this.

似つかわしくない: unsuitable
