Your lie in April Episode 1

四月は君の嘘
Your lie in April

Based on a manga by Naoshi Arakawa.
It's going to be split into two seasons.
To me, the atmosphere and conversational expression feel fresh.


モノトーン・カラフル
― Monotone/Colorful

●しくった!
 Shikutta
― She got all of that one!

しくる(shikuru) is short for しくじる(shikujiru: blow it).

●馬鹿みたいに飛ばすなよ!
 Baka mitai ni tobasunayo
― You don't have to hit the snot out of it!

●うわー!死体だー!
 Uwa- Shitai da-
― Oh juus! It's a corpse!

視界が赤い!
 Shikai ga akai
All I can see is red!

視界: a field of vision, sight, view

●割ったガラスの数は強打者勲章よ。
 Watta glass no kazu ha kyoudasha no kunsyou yo
― A slugger is only as good as the number of windows she's broken.

Literal: decoration, order
Apride, boast

●手なんか抜けるか!
 Te nanka nukeru ka
― No way am I batting with any less than my A-swing!

手を抜く(te wo nuku): slack off

●私は三冠王になるの!
 Watashi ha sankanou ni naru no
― I'm gonna win the Triple Crown!

ちりとり、ちりとりっと。
 Chitirori chiritori tto
Dustpan...dustpan...

●ところ構わず求め合うねぇ、おしどり夫婦
 Tokoro kamawazu motomeaunee oshidori-fuufu
― you seek each other out whenever, whatever... RIght, you loving hubby and wife?

おしどり:
  1. mandarin duck
  2. [extended] happily-married couple

土足で入るな、渡!
 Dosoku de hairuna Watari
― Don't come in here with your shoes on , Watari!

色気の次は食い気かよ?
 Iroke no tsugi ha kuike kayo
― So now it's food over sex, huh?

●しっかし公生も災難だよな。
 Shikkashi Kousei mo sainan dayona
― Damn, Kousei, talk about collateral damage.

説教された上に反省文2枚だって?
 Sekkyou sareta ue ni hanseibun nimai datte
― Not only did you get yelled at, but you have to write two letters of apology?

○長々と人の道徳について説教しようと思ってたんだが。
 Naganaga to hito no doutoku ni tsuite sekkyou shiyou to omottetandaga
― I could give you a long lecture on human morality.


●こんなのへっちゃら。軽いもんさ。
 Konna no hecchara Karui mon sa
― Oh, it's no big deal. Piece of cake!

●生まれたときから子守りしてきたから慣れちゃったよ。
 Umareta toki kara komori shitekita kara narechatta yo
― I've been babysitting her since birth, so it's second nature to me now.

●僕ひとりっ子なのに、世話の焼ける姉貴がいるみたい。
 Boku hitorikko nanoni sewa no yakeru aneki ga iru mitai
― Even though I'm an only child, it's like having a high-maintenance big sister.

He's like Mr. Shallow!

ザ(the) is used to emphasize the word that follows it.

  Stop the sarashi
― Stop The Humiliation!


●目は黒いから光らないだろ。
 Me ha kuroi kara hikaranai daro
― They don't sparkle because they're dark brown, obviously.

The color of Japanese eyes is usually described as 黒(black).

●出た!常識論!なんとなく分かるでしょ?
 Deta Joushikiron Nantonaku wakaru desho
― There it is! Conventional wisdom! You get my drift, don't you?

思春期なんだからピカーっと
 Shishunki nandakara pika- tto
― You're an adolescent, so they should be all lit up!


●彼と出会った瞬間、私の人生が変わったの。
 Kare to deatta shunkan watashi no jinsei ga kawattano
― "The moment I met him, my life changed.

●見るもの、聞くもの、感じるもの、
 Miru mono kiku mono kanjiru mono
― Everything I saw, everything I heard... Everything I felt...

●私の風景全部が色付き始めたの。
 Watashi no fuukei zenbu ga irozukihajimeta
― All the scenery around me started to take on color."


●僕にはモノトーンに見える。
 Boku niha monotone ni mieru
― To me it all looks like it's in monotone.

譜面のように、鍵盤のように、
 Fumen no youni Kenban no youni
― Just like music scores... Just like a keyboard...

●11歳の秋、僕は、ピアノが弾けなくなった。
 Juuissai no aki boku ha piano ga hikenakunatta
― The autumn I was eleven... I... Could no longer play the piano.

●隙あり!
 Suki ari
― Leaving yourself WIDE open!

A set phrase.

●あんま引っ張るなよ!
 Anma hipparunayo
― Hey, don't yank on those!

●あれ、グースハウスの新曲?
 Are Goose house no shinkyoku
― Hey, is this The Millions' new song?

The band performs the opening theme.

●決め付けるなよ!
 Kimetusukerunayo
― Don't just jump to conclusions!

●2対2ならちょうどいい。
 Ni tai ni nara choudoii
― But two on two would be perfect.

●話が詰まった時にさ、楽器の話とかできるでしょ?
 Hanashi ga tsumatta toki ni sa gakki no hanashi toka dekiru desho
― Whenever the conversation lags, you could talk about instruments and stuff, right?

●新譜を耳コピして譜面に起こしてるんだ。
 Shinpu wo mimikopi shite fumen ni okoshiterunda
― I'm transcribing the new songs by ear.

耳(mimi: ear) + コピー(copy)

― You're going to make it big in Europe, in my place.

― Just when I finally had a European competition in my sights, three years ago... My mother passed way.

●ピアノを除けば僕は空っぽで。
 Piano wo nozokeba boku ha karappo de
― Take away the piano, and I'm empty...

不細工な余韻しか残らない。
 Busaikuna yoin shika nokoranai
― There's nothing left but an ugly resonance.

5分前行動がなってない。
 Gofunmae koudou ga nattenai
― They should've been here five minutes early.

5分前行動: act 5 minutes earlier

●目印?魔除け?
 Mejirushi Mayoke
― To mark the spot? To ward off evil spirits?

ピアニカ?結構上手い。
 Pianica Kekkou umai
― A melodica? Pretty good playing, too.

"Pianica" is coined as a trade name of Yamaha and  most commonly used name.
Also there is a name "Melodion", a brand name of SUZUKI.

The melody is originally used for a impressive scene where Pazu is playing the trumpet while letting his pigeons fly in "Castle in the Sky".
Title: ハトと少年(hato to shounen) "Pigeons and a Boy"

●世界が輝き出したの。
 Sekai ga kagayakidashitano
― The whole world began to sparkle.

ラッパじゃないと駄目なんだよ。
 Rappa ja naito damenandayo
― It's gotta be a bugle, or it won't work.

I've thought it's an English word.

There are many theories of the origin, however, it's not clear.
  • the Dutch word "roeper" 
  • the Chinese word "喇叭"
  • the Sanskrit word "raval" meaning to shout
  • the Frenchi word "rappelle" meaning to recall

●トランペットだよ。
 Trumpet dayo
― You mean a trumpet.

●音楽に国境や人種や生態は関係ないわ。
 Ongaku ni kokkyou ya jinshu ya seitai ha kankeinai wa
― Borders, race, ecology... none of them mean anything in music.

絵になるなぁ…
 E ni naru naa
― What a great picture they make...

絵になる: make a good picture, picturesque

●ブレーメンの音楽隊だ!
 Bremen no ongakutai da
― They're the Bremen Town Musicians!

●鳩来た!
 Hato kita
― Here are the pigeons!

春一番だ!
 Haruichiban da
― It's the first spring storm!

It refers to the spring's first south wind.

●もうお嫁に行けない!
 Mou oyome ni ikenai
― You've ruined my chances for marriage!

It's a set phrase.

― I can't marry anymore.


盗撮魔め!許すまじ!この変態!
 Tousatsuma me Yurusumaji Kono hentai
― You camera voyeur! You won't get away with this! You pervert!

●女同士の可愛いは当てになんねぇからな。
 Onna doushi no kawaii ha ate ni nannee kara na
― Girls calling other girls "cute"... not exactly credible, you know.

当てにならない(ate ni naranai): unreliable, untrustworthy

●では改めまして。
 Deha aratamemashite
― Uh, let's take it from the top.

●何たる変わり身の早さ
 Nankaru kawarimi no hayasa
― Can you believe that instant about-face?

変わり身が早い(kawarimi ga hayai): quick to adapt to changing circumstances

見惚れた自分が恥ずかしい。
 Mitoreta jibun ga hazukashii
― I'm ashamed of myself for being transfixed.

見とれる(mitoreru): fascinated, admire

 Yuki Fukami-san ni mitoreta
― Yuki was just staring at Fukami-san.


●先に声かけて抜け駆けなんて、あんたも隅に置けないわね。
 Saki ni koe kakete nukegake nante anta mo sumi ni okenai wane
― Beating him to the punch by approaching her first... My, my, are't you the player?

抜け駆けする(nukegakesuru): go ahead of, steal a march

隅に置けない
Literally: can't put someone in a corner
↓ considerable enough not to be put in an obscure place such as a corner
Actual meaning: more to someone than meets the eye, stud

●だから奇跡的な偶然で!
 Dakara kisekiteki na guuzen de
― I'm telling you, it was a miraculous coincidence!

○その時まさに偶然の導きから奇跡の一曲が生まれた。

― At that very moment, a miraculous song was born from a coinsidental push of fate.

― Today, you're in a supporting role.

⇔ 主役(shuyaku): leading role

引き立て役の友人A。
 Hikitateyaku no yuujin A
― You're just Friend A, derving as Watari's foil.

引き立て役: setoff, foil

― I'm a violinist.

 Juuyonsai no haru boku ha kimi to hashiridasu
― The spring of my fourteenth year... I... I'm taking off with you.


The name for "MOMO" is written on an eraser, but the original name is "MONO".
