The director said that the melody is "岳人の歌 (Gakujin no Uta: Alpinist's Song)" which was sung in Episode 1. And he plans to use it at important scenes in the future as well. Actually this instrumental is also played in Episode 9.

According to his further commentary, the truth is that the casts whistled. Yui Ogura casted as Kokona couldn't whistle, but practiced very hard for the recording. On the other hand, Kana Asumi casted as Hinata... Hikasa Yoko casted as Kaede whistled in place of her.●お腹ペコペコ！
