The name derives from the literal meaning of "痺れる (numb)."

― A sinner named Kandata is in Hell one day when Shakyamuni, moved by the single compassionate act of his life, sparing a spider's life, lowers a spider's thread down from Heaven to him.
"The Spider's Thread" (蜘蛛の糸 Kumo no Ito) is a 1918 short story by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, first published in the children's magazine Akai Tori.
